History of the place and interesting facts

Bacalar is one of the oldest towns in the region and was founded by the Spanish in 1543. It played an important role during the colonial period as a defence base against pirates, which explains the construction of the San Felipe fortress. The city was also an important centre for trade along the Mayan and Spanish coasts.
