Cuba offers many colorful and lively festivals that are well worth attending. In addition to the spectacular carnival in Santiago de Cuba, there is the equally impressive carnival in Havana. But Cuba has much more to offer. Various dance festivals take place throughout the year, celebrating different dance styles such as tango, merengue and even ballet. But the celebrations are not limited to music and dance. Cuba is also known for its rich literary tradition. And of course, every year there is a big event to celebrate the world-famous Cuban cigars.

We present some of the most important Cuban festivals!

Havana International Jazz Festival

January/February

Attention music lovers! In January, you can enjoy a week of authentic jazz music in Havana. The heart of Cuba and its music are inextricably linked. The Havana International Jazz Festival has become increasingly successful over the years and has quickly spread throughout the city. Today, the events take place in concert halls, cafés, cabarets, but also in the lively streets and squares of Havana. This festival attracts cigar lovers, experts and celebrities from all over the world and offers a unique opportunity to experience the best Cuban cigars and learn more about the art of cigar making. The best insights into the entire Habano production process can be gained at tobacco plantations and tobacco factories, which can be visited as part of the festival.

Havana International Book Fair

february

If you want to take it a little easier and prefer a more relaxed atmosphere instead of loud music and bright colors, a visit to the Havana Book Fair is just the thing for you. It is considered the biggest cultural event on the island and attracts millions of visitors every year. It not only celebrates Cuba's deep-rooted literary traditions, but also presents the latest publications from the Spanish-speaking world and related countries. The fair thus covers the entire spectrum of literary works from Central and South America.

Each year, a Guest of Honor country (in 2024 it was Brazil) is chosen for the book fair, and the event is then dedicated to that country. This tradition promotes cultural exchange and strengthens bilateral relations between Cuba and the host country. Many prominent personalities, including renowned writers, poets and artists, take part in panel discussions, workshops and lectures during the days.

A literary journey through Cuba

Although the event is called the Havana Book Fair, it does not only take place at this location. After concluding the first ten days in the San Carlos de la Cabaña fortress in Havana, the fair moves on across the country. It visits numerous cities and provinces, including Santiago de Cuba, where it ends with a series of literary and cultural activities.

Havana Carnival

Every year at the weekends in July and August, Havana hosts the second largest carnival in Cuba, the Havana Carnival(Carnaval de La Habana). This transforms the Malecón promenade into a festive spectacle with music, dancing and colorful costumes. With elaborate and creative costumes, participants compete in contests for the best disguises and the coveted titles of King and Queen of Carnival are awarded. In addition to these main attractions, food stalls offer traditional Cuban dishes and snacks, such as ropa vieja, tostones and yuca. There are also special programs and activities for children, including games, workshops and performances suitable for children. In this respect, the carnival in Havana is considered to be particularly family-friendly and therefore attracts many tourists.
