Baracoa, founded by the Spanish in 1511, is considered the first city and capital of Cuba. Due to its remote location, it has remained relatively isolated, preserving its unique charm and cultural heritage. The city's name is derived from the indigenous Taino word meaning "land of water", referring to the numerous rivers and abundant rainfall in the area. It is worth noting that until the construction of La Farola, a winding mountain road, Baracoa was only accessible by sea. La Farola was completed in the 1960s and connects Baracoa to the rest of Cuba by land. Read more about the history of Cuba.
Baracoa's culture is a rich tapestry of Spanish, African and indigenous Taíno influences. The city celebrates numerous festivals, including the Carnaval de Baracoa and the Fiesta de las Aguas. Music and dance are integral parts of local life, with genres such as nengón and kiriba originating here. The cuisine is distinctive and is characterised by tropical fruits, coconut milk and seafood, reflecting the natural richness of the region. Read more about the culture of Cuba.
