The Laguna del Tesoro, which means "treasure lake" in German, got its name from the legends about hidden treasures of the Taino Indians. In the 1970s, the region was declared a national park in order to protect the unique flora and fauna. Today, the lagoon is a popular destination for ecotourism and offers visitors the opportunity to experience the untouched nature and rich history of the area.
