History of the place and interesting facts

The Laguna del Tesoro, which means "treasure lake" in German, got its name from the legends about hidden treasures of the Taino Indians. In the 1970s, the region was declared a national park in order to protect the unique flora and fauna. Today, the lagoon is a popular destination for ecotourism and offers visitors the opportunity to experience the untouched nature and rich history of the area. The Taino replica at Aldea Taina offers deep insights into the history and culture of the indigenous people of Cuba. Read more about the history of Cuba.

Culture

The culture around the Laguna del Tesoro is strongly influenced by the traditions of the Taino Indians. Visitors can explore authentic Taino villages, experience traditional dances and rituals and enjoy fresh seafood and traditional Cuban dishes. The Zapata Peninsula is also famous for its large crocodile breeding station, the largest in Cuba and supposedly the second largest in the world. Thousands of crocodiles live here in different tanks, separated by size, species and age. Opened in 1962, the station was founded to protect endangered Cuban crocodile species, a project supported by Fidel Castro. During guided tours, you can learn more about the life cycle and husbandry of the crocodiles. Read more about the culture of Cuba.
