The Valle de los Ingenios, also known as the Valley of the Sugar Factories, was the main center of sugar production in Cuba in the 18th and 19th centuries and contributed significantly to the wealth of the Trinidad region. The valley consisted of three interconnected valleys that were responsible for much of Cuba's sugar production and were home to over 70 sugar factories. Sugar production flourished and led to the construction of magnificent plantation houses, impressive infrastructure and numerous machinery.
In the late 19th century, the valley was severely damaged by the War of Independence and the Spanish-American War. Nevertheless, some remains such as sugar mills, manor houses, steam trains and slave quarters have been preserved. Some of these relics have been collected in the San Isidro de los Destiladeros Museum, which is now open to the public.
