The fascinating waterfalls of Chiapas

The Agua Azul waterfalls in the state of Chiapas are one of the country's most impressive natural attractions. Agua Azul (meaning "blue water") consists of a series of smaller waterfalls that flow into basins and form pools. Agua Azul is located around 60 kilometres from Palenque. Over a length of more than 6 kilometres, turquoise-blue masses of water carve their way through the tropical rainforest. The waterfalls consist of a total of 500 individual cascades up to 6 metres high along the entire route. The surrounding rainforest was declared a protected biosphere reserve in 1980 and is home to many exotic animals such as anteaters, howler monkeys, ocelots, jaguars, tapirs and toucans.

Interesting facts about Agua Azul

The waterfalls of Agua Azul are formed by the Río Agua Azul. The minerals contained in the water, especially lime, give the river its spectacular turquoise-blue colour. The different cascades also form individual pools of water, each with a different blue colour. During the dry season, the pools range in colour from azure blue to emerald green. In the rainy season, however, the water is usually brown in colour due to the large amounts of rain.

Another effect of the minerals is that the river is shaped and changed by their deposition. A falling tree, for example, is immediately covered with minerals and over time becomes surrounded by a layer of rock.
