Mystical water worlds of the Maya

Cenotes are natural freshwater caves and underground lakes created by the collapse of limestone formations, exposing the groundwater beneath. There are thousands of these impressive cenotes on the Yucatán Peninsula, which were once considered sacred places by the Maya. They were not only used as a source of water, but also for religious rituals. Today, many of Mexico's cenotes are popular destinations for swimmers, snorkellers and divers who want to explore the crystal-clear water and fascinating rock formations in this unique environment.

History of the place and interesting facts

Cenotes in the Yucatán have a long history dating back to the Maya, who revered them as sacred water sources. These natural sinkholes were used for religious ceremonies and were a central part of Mayan life. After the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, the cenotes lost their spiritual significance, but remained important sources of water for the indigenous population. Mexico Cenote diving offers a unique experience in the impressive underwater caves of the Yucatán Peninsula. Today they are important tourist attractions and offer visitors insights into the geology of the region.

History of Mexico

Cenote culture

The culture of the cenotes is strongly characterised by the Mayan tradition, which attached special importance to these places. Cenotes are not only natural wonders, but also symbolise the connection between man and nature. They play an important role in local myths and legends and are part of the identity of the communities that live near them. Today, many cenotes promote awareness of environmental and cultural preservation by serving as educational and recreational centres.

More cenotes on the Riviera Maya

The Gran Cenote, which is only five kilometres from Tulum, is particularly impressive thanks to its comfortable facilities with changing rooms and lockers as well as the excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities. A visit is also worthwhile because of the numerous turtles that can be observed at close quarters.

One of the world's most famous cave diving sites is the Cenote Dos Ojos, whose name translates as "two eyes" and refers to the circular shape of the two adjacent cenotes, which look up from the ground like two large eyes. The numerous stalagmites, stalactites and columns can of course be explored not only by diving, but also by swimming or snorkelling. The cenote is located on the way from Tulum to Akumal and served as the backdrop for the 2005 Hollywood film "The Cave".
