History of the place and interesting facts

Yucatán has a rich and complex history dating back to pre-Columbian times. The region was once the centre of the Mayan civilisation, known for its advanced architecture, mathematics, astronomy and writing. Important cities such as Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and Tikal flourished during the Classic Period (250-900 AD), leaving behind impressive ruins that are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

With the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, a period of conquest and colonisation began, which brought about profound changes in society and culture. In the 19th century, Yucatán also experienced conflicts such as the Caste War, an armed uprising of the Maya against the Mexican government that lasted from 1847 to 1901. The region has since established itself as a major tourist destination, preserving both its colonial and pre-Columbian history.

Culture of Yucatán

The culture of the Yucatán is a fascinating mixture of Mayan and Spanish influences. The traditions, festivals and daily life of the locals are strongly characterised by Mayan culture. The Maya still speak many different languages today, and the religious practices and customs are deeply rooted in their history.

Yucatán is also famous for its culinary specialities, including dishes such as cochinita pibil (slow-cooked pork) and panuchos (stuffed tortillas). The region celebrates numerous festivals, including the Hanal Pixán, a festival that honours the ancestors and commemorates the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Craft traditions, such as weaving fabrics and making pottery, are also part of Yucatán's cultural identity. The region attracts tourists with its vibrant culture, music and dances that keep the history and identity of the Maya alive.
