History of the place and interesting facts

Teotihuacán, one of the most important pre-Columbian cities in Mesoamerica, was founded around 100 BC and experienced its heyday between 100 and 600 AD. The city was an important religious, cultural and economic centre and covered an area of around 20 square kilometres. Teotihuacán was known for its monumental buildings, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Its political and cultural dominance extended far beyond the Valley of Mexico. For unknown reasons, the city was abandoned around the 7th century before the Aztecs discovered it centuries later and honoured it as a sacred place.

History of Mexico

Culture of Teotihuacán

The culture of Teotihuacán was characterised by religious beliefs and complex urban life. The city was a cosmopolitan metropolis where different peoples lived together, which is reflected in the architecture and art. The construction of the pyramids and temples was closely linked to the worship of gods such as Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, and Tlaloc, the rain god. Art, murals and handmade ceramics bear witness to a highly developed society with a deep-rooted belief in the power of the cosmos and nature. The city was a centre of trade and culture, with influences that extended across much of Mesoamerica.
