Mexico City, once Tenochtitlán, was founded by the Aztecs in 1325 and grew to become the powerful capital of their empire. In 1521, the Spaniards under Hernán Cortés conquered the city, built their colonial capital on the ruins of the Aztecs and named it Mexico City. Since then, the city has developed into a centre of political, economic and cultural power in Mexico.

The Basilica de Guadalupe is the most visited Catholic site in the world after the Vatican; on 12 December alone, the day of St Guadalupe, 6 million people make a pilgrimage to the basilica. As the city was built on a lake, it sinks by 15 to 20 cm every year.
