History of the place and interesting facts

Tulum was an important trading and harbour city of the Mayan culture, which flourished between 1200 and 1500 AD. Located on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the city served as a strategic trading post that facilitated the exchange of goods and ideas between various Mayan cities and the coastal regions. Tulum is known for its well-preserved ruins, including the impressive pyramid of El Castillo, which honours the god of the wind, Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl. By the time the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century, Tulum had already fallen into decline, but the ruins remain an important legacy of Mayan culture to this day and attract numerous tourists.

History of Mexico

Culture of Tulum

The culture of Tulum is strongly influenced by the Mayan tradition and is reflected in the architecture, artwork and customs of the region. Tulum was known for its religious practices, which were closely linked to nature and the Caribbean Sea. Traditional festivals and ceremonies, often linked to the harvest and the cycles of nature, are still celebrated today. Tulum has also developed into a centre for yoga and wellness, where many retreats and spiritual practices take place. The local gastronomy offers a mix of traditional Mayan dishes and modern culinary influences, with fresh seafood and local ingredients taking centre stage.

Rediscovery of the plant

Just like Chichén Itzá, Tulum was rediscovered by the American archaeologist John Lloyd Stephens and his British draughtsman Frederick Catherwood and was completely overgrown by the jungle at the time of its rediscovery in 1842. It was only between 1916 and 1922 that the city was uncovered and reconstructed with the help of the Carnegie Institute.
