The jewel of the Mayan civilisation

Chichén Itzá is one of the most famous archaeological sites in Mexico and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site was once an important city of the Mayan civilisation and flourished between the 7th and 10th centuries. The pyramid of Kukulkán, also known as El Castillo, is particularly impressive with its unique architecture and astronomical orientation.

Highlights

in Chichén Itzá

Pyramid of Kukulkán as an architectural masterpiece
Temple of the Warriors with fascinating reliefs and sculptures
Large ball court as a venue for Mayan ritual games
Sacred tent with a clear reference to Mayan mythology
Astronomical orientation of the buildings for religious ceremonies

The architectural masterpiece is unmistakably made up of two different structures, an older part inside the pyramid and the outer part, which is a masterpiece of calendar knowledge. Hardly any important Mayan structure was built without an astronomical-astrological background and so the Kukulkán pyramid is a perfect union of space and time! Steep 45° staircases lead up the four sides of the pyramid to the temple house. Each of these stairs has exactly 91 steps, making a total of 364 steps. The temple house itself also stands on one step, making a total of 365 steps, which corresponds exactly to the number of days in a solar year.
