Frequently asked questions about cycle tours in Cuba
To make it easier for you to prepare for your trip, we have included bikes for hire on all our special bike tours. Alternatively, you can bring your trusty bike from home. If you bring your own bike, please let us know at the time of booking so that we can ensure that your bike is suitable for the tour in question. Further information can be found in your travel notes.
You bring your own bike: If you are a dedicated cyclist or just want to take your bike with you on vacation, you can usually bring it along for the ride. You will need to pack it for transportation on the plane: The easiest way to do this is to go to your local bike shop and ask if they will do it for you (there may be a charge for this). They often have boxes of old stock in stock and have the tools to remove the pedals and secure your handlebars. There are also airline fees, so check with your airline for costs. Remember that not all trips can accommodate your own bike, so let us know what you're planning at the time of booking.
Bike for hire: The bikes we use are from trusted brands, well maintained, usually less than 3 years old (most are newer) and specifically chosen for the terrain you will be riding on the trip. They come in all sizes from extra small to extra large and usually have front suspension, flat bars and 27 gears. The only thing you need to do is let us know your height when you book. We'll take care of the rest. If you wish, you can always bring your own saddle (seat) or gel cover for comfort, and if you want to use cleated shoes, bring your pedals and shoes too.
All airlines have their own rules and fees for transporting bicycles. Contact the airline (preferably) before paying for your flights to find out what fees and requirements they have. Before you fly, you will need to pack your bike for transportation. If you book the flight through Sprachcaffe, we will be happy to organize the transport for you.
Transporting an e-bike on a plane is difficult as most airlines do not allow transportation due to the large lithium-ion batteries, which are considered dangerous goods. Some airlines do allow transportation if the battery is removed and shipped separately. It is important to check with the airline in advance about their specific guidelines and, if necessary, have the battery transported by an approved carrier.
Helmets are compulsory on our bike tours, so you can either bring your own helmet or borrow one (to save luggage space). We also recommend that you bring your own water bottle and closed shoes. You may also want to bring cycling shorts and (if you cycle regularly at home) your own saddle and pedals.
On all our cycle tours, your accommodation is pre-booked and your luggage is transported from one place to the next. All you need to take with you is water, snacks and appropriate clothing to keep you dry and warm. A small, lightweight backpack is very useful.
All you need to enjoy our bike tours is the ability to ride a bike and a passion for discovering Cuba on two wheels.
While there are occasional longer days on some itineraries, the vast majority of our bike tours are between 30 and 60 km and are done at a leisurely pace. There are also plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery or simply take a break. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can manage without any problems. However, our guides adapt the tours individually to the sporting level of each tour group. An air-conditioned coach accompanies you on the cycle tours, so there is no problem if you want to skip a stage.
Our bike tours are mostly on paved roads (with the occasional unpaved section), but none of the tours require special cycling skills. We've also researched additional cycle routes in each of the destinations we visit, so if you want to stretch your legs a little more, you can.
We regularly ride every single one of our bike tours to ensure that they meet the requirements. We have assessed the road conditions, traffic levels and any potential danger spots. Our guides are trained in first aid and we usually have a vehicle following us should an evacuation become necessary.
Should you suffer any injuries during the trip, these are usually covered by reputable travel insurance policies. It is important to check the small print of your insurance before you travel as travel insurance is compulsory on our cycle tours. You can find more information about travel insurance here.
