From tropical rainforests to vast deserts and high mountain ranges, Mexico's nature is as diverse as its culture. This wealth of nature attracts thousands of travellers every year who want to explore the country's fascinating landscapes and unique wildlife.

Mexico wildlife

Mexico's wildlife is just as impressive as its landscapes. The country is home to a large number of animal species, including many that are not found in other parts of the world. Sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beaches of the Pacific coast and the Caribbean, while the tropical rainforests are home to the majestic jaguars, a symbol of Mexican wilderness. Mexico's coasts are also known for their spectacular whale watching. In the Baja California region in particular, grey whales can be seen giving birth to their young in the warm waters off the coast from December to April. Dolphins and manta rays are also frequently seen in the waters around Mexico.

Mexico is also home to an impressive variety of reptiles. With over 700 known reptile species, Mexico ranks first in the world for reptile biodiversity. Various species of lizards, including numerous iguanas, can be observed in many regions of the country. Many bird species can be found in the country's mountainous regions and forests, including the colourful quetzal and various toucan species. Mexico is also an important habitat for monarch butterflies, which make a spectacular migration from North America to the mountain forests of Michoacán every winter to spend the winter there.

Mexico Flora

Mexico's flora is just as diverse as the country itself. The tropical rainforests are home to impressive trees such as mahogany and ceiba, which form the dense canopy. In the drier regions of Mexico, you will find vast landscapes of cacti, including the famous saguaros and opuntias that adorn the deserts. A unique feature of the Mexican landscape are the cenotes, natural karst caves with crystal-clear water surrounded by lush vegetation. Mexico is also home to numerous colourful flower species, such as the national flower dahlia, bougainvillea and hibiscus, which adorn the country with vibrant colours.

Mexico Sights Nature

Among the most impressive natural sights are the Agua Azul and Misol-Ha waterfalls in Chiapas. These waterfalls offer turquoise-coloured water in the midst of green forests and are popular destinations for nature lovers. The cenotes around Tulum, which is also known for its archaeological ruins right by the sea, are particularly popular.

The Hierve el Agua in Oaxaca is a limestone formation that resembles a frozen waterfall and offers breathtaking views. Rainy season Mexico

The rainy season in Mexico generally runs from May to October, especially in the tropical and subtropical regions of the country. During this time, there are frequent, but usually short and heavy rain showers, which mainly occur in the afternoon. These rains are crucial for the vegetation, as they fill up the rivers and cenotes and turn the landscape a lush green colour. The rainy season also cools down the otherwise hot temperatures, especially in the southern parts of the country and along the coast.
